What Is Twitter?
Twitter is one of the most well-known free social networks of our time, which began operating in 2006 and now has more than 350 million users. In its essence, Twitter resembles a mix between a blog and a chat room. The difference between blog posts and those on Twitter is that a post on the latter can contain a maximum of 140 characters — this is called “microblogging.”
Advantages of Twitter
A big plus of Twitter is that during registration, you do not need to provide any personal data other than your first and last name and email address (elsewhere they may also ask for: gender, date of birth, phone number, location, etc.). Once you are a registered user, you can add photos, location, write something about yourself, and that is about it. By not having the option to publish a lot of personal data, we are less exposed to various types of abuse.
Another advantage over others is certainly Twitter’s versatility. As a user, you can chat with friends, “follow” posts on topics that interest you, share your own posts, and advertise.
A unique feature is “following,” since by following the posts of those groups, companies, celebrities, or news outlets that interest us, we save quite a bit of time that we would otherwise spend browsing the web. Additionally, messages on Twitter are quite short, so the reading offered to us is a summary of the very essence and takes us practically just a few minutes. This allows us to always stay up to date with the content that interests us, with minimal time loss.
If you have very little time, you can enable in your personal settings to have the posts you have chosen, which appear on your profile, sent directly to your phone as SMS messages completely free of charge.
How Twitter Works
Twitter is a dynamic social network that allows users to stay informed and connected through short, concise messages called tweets. Users can decide which content they want to follow by following other users, brands, news institutions, and various topics and hashtags that interest them. This creates a personal timeline that represents a combination of posts from their favorite authors and topics.
The timeline usually reflects the user’s preferences and interests, enabling a personalized experience. In addition to regular tweets published by people we follow, we also have the option to see retweeted posts. These can be a contribution from the original author that someone shared in their network, meaning that important or interesting information can quickly reach a wider audience.
On the other hand, Twitter also includes promoted tweets — these are paid advertising posts that companies and brands use to increase their reach and attract new audiences. These tweets often appear at the top of the user’s timeline or in the recommendation section, allowing users to discover new content that might interest them.
Additionally, Twitter enables user interaction. Followers can reply to tweets, share them, or mark them with “like,” which further encourages active participation and discussion. This interactivity plays a key role in the nature of Twitter, as it promotes the rapid spread of information and opinions. Users can also participate in thematic discussions by following certain hashtags, which enables connection with others who share similar interests.
Due to its nature, Twitter has become a popular platform for news agencies, public figures, and activists, as it enables the fast and effective spread of important information in real time. Thus, Twitter is not only a communication tool but also an important source of news and diverse perspectives in the modern digital world.
Advertising on Twitter
All we need for advertising is to sign up and attract as many visitors to our microblog as possible. For example, if we have 100 visitors or “followers,” at least half of them will read our post — the same applies if we have a published web address. But it is not all that simple. To attract many visitors, we need to thematically align our posts, comment on as many posts from other users as possible, share addresses of interesting websites, look for acquaintances, friends, and so on. If we have the resources, we can hire someone to manage our Twitter advertising for us.
History of Twitter
In 2006, Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams founded Twitter. The idea for Twitter emerged as a desire to use a short messaging system for a small group. It became available to the public in July 2006.
The definition of a tweet is a short burst of inconsequential information and chirps from birds, which describes the purpose of the social network on Twitter — sharing short and quick information.
Other important milestones of Twitter:
2012: More than 100 million users publish 340 million tweets daily.
2013: Twitter ranks among the ten most visited websites.
2013: Twitter files for an IPO in September.
2019: Twitter has more than 330 million active users.
2022: Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, reaches a deal to purchase Twitter for 44 billion dollars and converts it into a private company in April.
